Visiting the Capitol

bullet Location
The U.S. Capitol is located on Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall. Group tours typically begin at the Capitol Visitor Center, the new main entrance to the U.S. Capitol, located on the East Front of the Capitol building at First Street and East Capitol Street, N.E.

bullet Hours
The Capitol Visitor Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Inauguration Day.

Tours are available from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday with the exception of the holidays noted above.

bullet Tour Passes
Tour passes, which are provided free of charge, are required to visit areas of the Capitol beyond the Capitol Visitor Center. A limited number of same-day passes are available at the tour kiosks on the East and West Fronts of the Capitol or at the Information Desks on the lower level of the Capitol Visitors Center.

To ensure admittance to the Capitol, it is recommended that you book your tour in advance.

bullet Book a Tour
Groups of 15 or fewer may book a tour through their Representative’s office. To contact your Representative, use the “Write Your Representative” service provided by http://house.gov. Tours can also be arranged online using the U.S. Capitol Visitor Services reservation system.

Tours for groups of more than 15 can be booked online using the U.S. Capitol Visitor Services group reservation system.

bullet For Tour Bus Operators and Tour Organizers
Tour bus operators should view the Tour Bus Route Map available from the Architect of the Capitol. Please use one of these routes when traveling between the tour drop-off/pickup point on First Street, S.W., and the bus parking lot.
